Ford Bronco Under NHTSA Investigation for Catastrophic Engine Failure

The 2021 Ford Bronco is now the focus of the NHTSA investigation after 32 bronco owners complained of alarming engine failure experiences.

“Under normal driving conditions without warning the vehicle may experience a loss of motive power without restart due to catastrophic engine failure related to a faulty valve within 2.7 L Eco-Boost Engines,” according to the NHTSA report.

As per the reports, a number of 2021 Ford Bronco owners are having problems with their twin-turbocharged 2.7L V6 EcoBoost powerplants, mainly caused by valve-related issues.

Although the ultimate cause of the issue has yet to be discovered, the scale of the damage is such that the automaker may have to completely replace the engine after this issue presents itself.

“We are aware of a select number of engines with this concern, and we are investigating,” Ford told The Drive in April. “If any customers are experiencing issues, they will be covered under the vehicle’s 5-year, 60,000-mile powertrain warranty.”

With owners allegedly losing power while driving, it is a concern beyond the financial one. A sudden, catastrophic engine failure while driving could increase the risk of an accident occurring.

Documents filed by Ford with NHTSA say 25,538 vehicles may have this problem.

Alarming customer experiences

The Bronco is receiving huge reports from drivers who have experienced the said engine failure. As of May 31, 2022, there are 50 reported vehicles – some are as young as 3 miles while others have almost 7,000 miles. Here are some alarming customer experiences.

  • “Was driving my son to school, maybe 30 mph when all of a sudden I heard some clicking noises from the engine,” one complaint reads. “The power dropped, and I was barely able to pull over to the side of the busy road out of harm’s way. Engine dead. Only warning lights I got were a forward sensor failure and then a message telling me to pull over put it in park and restart. I tried but I was not able to restart, the starter fired but didn’t seem to engage with anything. Got towed to the dealer. Dealer confirmed a dropped valve and engine failure. Awaiting a replacement engine.”
  • “After 625 miles the low engine oil pressure alert came on. Had vehicle towed to dealership. After inspection they stated the engine will need to be replaced. It has now been two months and I’m still waiting for my vehicle to be repaired,” another owner said.
  • “At 2,000 miles the engine dropped a valve. Vehicle has already received a new engine. Vehicle shut off running down the interstate.”
  • “broke down with 2058 miles. Flashing engine light, strong fumes smell and vigorously shaking. Ford customer care said there’s nothing they could do. Not even a loaner for a $63k vehicle.”

Not the first Bronco recall

The 2021 Bronco has two recalls already – one was issued in October for potentially 553 vehicles for passenger airbag deployment problems and another was issued in December for a misaligned radar module that could prevent the vehicle from maintaining a safe distance from vehicles while using adaptive cruise control.

In addition, the NHTSA said, “The automatic braking system may react slowly, or not react at all, during a pre-collision assist braking event.”

Ford Mustang Class Action Suit over Manual Transmission Woes

Ford Mustang is facing a class action lawsuit over manual transmission. The suit covers cars purchased or leased from 2011-2019 equipped with MT82 or MT82-D4 transmissions. As per the owners of Ford Mustang, cars have defects that cause the transmissions to slip, jerk, engage harshly, clash gears, suffer premature wear, and eventually fail.

The suit also claims that transmission replacement does not solve that problem. “Repairing or replacing the defective parts does not resolve the Transmission problem, as the customer is left with inherently defective parts or receives another defective part in its place.”

The class action lawsuit claims that Ford was aware of the transmission problems as back in 2010 during pre-release testing and alleges that the automaker “has actively concealed the transmission defect” and “failed to disclose this defect to consumers” after knowing the issue. The suit also notes that Ford has issued several special service messages and technical service bulletins to dealerships regarding the shifting issues and other defects.

The lawsuit states that the automaker caused the problem by using less expensive manual transmissions. Both the Getrag MT82 and MT82-D4 transmissions are defective according to the owners and have created endless problems.

The suit references a 2011 NHTSA investigation which found 364 reports about shifting while driving, especially in cold weather. NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation concluded, “There is no indication of loss of motive power or unreasonable safety risk associated with the alleged defect in the subject vehicles,” and it closed the investigation.

The class action lawsuit is demanding $5 million in damages. The suit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California but has been moved to the Eastern District of Michigan.

Ford Says Transmission Lawsuit Should Be Dismissed

Ford told judges that the entire lawsuit should be dismissed because plaintiffs must specifically allege what is defective about their transmissions rather than relying on “conclusory allegations. Further, Ford argues it is not enough to allege only the symptoms of a defect.

“This disagreement about what is required to plead a defect has not been settled by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Nor does it seem to be a settled issue in any other circuit.” — Judge Michelson

However, the judge found the plaintiffs in the lawsuit alleged more than just symptoms.

“The Court must read Plaintiffs’ allegations as a whole and in the light most favorable to Plaintiffs.” — Judge Michelson

The judge didn’t dismiss the entire Ford class action lawsuit and moved on to discuss claims made by Mustang owners.

Ford has succeeded regarding claims the automaker allegedly violated the Michigan Consumer Protection Act but didn’t have much luck regarding providing notice under the California Consumers Legal Remedies Act.

Is Ford Aware About Possible Mustang Transmission Problems?

The judge has approved the class action lawsuit against Ford Mustang. The judge wrote in his order. “But these Plaintiffs allege, to Lee Iacocca’s chagrin, that their cars are more like Pintos than Mustangs.”

The allegations in the lawsuit go back to 2010 and incorporate a 2011 investigation conducted by the NHTSA, though it failed to conclude the MT82 posed any “unreasonable” safety risks.

There were 364 complaints reported by owners, but over 300 of those complaints were provided by Ford.

The MT82-D4 Ford Mustang Transmission

For the 2018 Mustang, Ford released a new version of the transmission, the MT82-D4.

But in March 2018, Ford issued several service bulletins regarding the  “inability or difficulty to shift into second gear” for 2018 Mustangs built on or before November 15, 2017, and then “inability to shift into 3rd or 4th gear” for all 2018 Mustangs. And just two months after that, Ford issued a bulletin for 2018-2019 Mustangs regarding “inability to drive in first and second gear.”

According to the judge, the plaintiffs who purchased 2018 and 2019 Mustangs have adequately pleaded “Ford committed fraud by failing to disclose a material fact about their vehicles’ transmission.”

Ford Latest Recalls 737,000 Vehicles Over Oil Leaks & Faulty Trailer Brakes

Ford has issued two recalls involving more than 737,000 vehicles in the United States due to oil leak and trailer brake issues.

The oil leak recall includes the 2020-22 Ford Escape SUV and the 2021-22 Bronco Sport SUV with 1.5-litre engines. A housing can crack, and oil can leak onto engine parts, which can cause a fire hazard.

“An oil leak in the presence of an ignition source such as hot engine or exhaust components can increase the risk of a fire,” the company says.

The software error can stop trailers from braking, increasing the risk of a crash.

Software And Fire Risk Issues

Ford confirmed it had reports on at least 8 fires incidents and 67 other reports that may be related to the issues but no reports of injuries or crashes.

The company is also recalling  391,836 2021-2022 F-150, 2022 Ford Maverick, Expedition, Lincoln avigator, F-250, F-350, F-450, and F-550 vehicles because a towed trailer equipped with an electric or electric over hydraulic brake system might not brake.

Ford Investigation And Fix

Ford confirms cracks at the edge of the oil separator housing were causing a loss of seal support, leading to oil leaks between the oil separator and engine camshaft cover.

“If sufficient engine oil leaks, accumulates, and migrates to an ignition source, an underhood fire can occur, increasing the risk of injury,” the recall notice says.

Owners are warned that they may smell or see oil smoke coming out from the underhood area.

The company will start sending notifications by mail to take your vehicle to the dealership to have the oil separator inspected for damage or oil leaks, and, if either is present, to replace the oil separator and seals. It will be free of charge.

Notification to dealers has begun. Mailing of owner notification letters is expected to begin Apr. 18.

Trailer Brakes Not Working Issue

Ford is also recalling  391,836 2021-2022 F-150, 2022 Ford Maverick, Expedition, Lincoln avigator, F-250, F-350, F-450, and F-550 vehicles due to trailer brakes not working issue.

“Loss of trailer brake functionality could result in extended stopping distance, increasing the risk of a crash,” according to the recall notice on the NHTSA website.

This issue is caused by a software error, ford said. The error means a towed trailer equipped with an electric or electric over hydraulic brake system may not brake.

Owners will be notified by mail to take their vehicles to a Ford or Lincoln dealer to have the integrated trailer brake control module software updated free of cost.

Ford is currently not facing any legal action for the recalls, but people are monitoring it. Last year, Ford was hit with a class action lawsuit alleging a Ford Fusion transmission problem that could cause sudden shaking, violent jerking, and difficulty stopping.

In December, Ford announced a recall for nearly 115,000 of its 2021 and 2022 model Bronco Sport and Ford Escape SUVs over faulty rear brake linings.

Ford Issues Safety Recalls for 2020-2021 F-150 Pickups

The latest safety recalls by Ford involve 2020-2021 F-150 Pickup trucks issues for incorrect payload information and inadequate windshield adhesion. Ford said that it is not aware of any accidents or injuries involving the recall issues.

Ford Issues Recalls For Incorrect Payload Information

Ford is recalling 2020 Ford F-Series Super Duty vehicles with 6.7-liter engines for incorrect payload information built at Kentucky Truck Plant from May 13, 2019, to Sept. 19, 2020.

Ford will recall 9,979 vehicles in the U.S. and federal territories and 1,750 in Canada.

Ford said, affected vehicles display overstated payload capacity values on the tire and loading information label, overstated accessory reserve capacity values on the safety certification label, and overstated weight values on the truck camper loading documentation

“If the vehicles are loaded to the payload stated on the tire and loading information label, they may exceed the gross vehicle weight rating or gross axle weight rating,” Ford said. “This may result in tire loading beyond rated capacity, suspension overload, and increased stopping distance, which could increase the risk of a crash.”

Ford claims they are not aware of any accidents or injuries related to this issue.

The company will notify affected owners the week of March 22 and dealers will replace the tire and loading information label, safety certification label, and if needed, the truck camper loading document. The Ford reference number for this recall is 21S06.

Ford Issues Recalls For Inadequate Windshield Adhesion

Ford has announced safety recalls for its bestselling 2020-2021 F-150 pickup truck for an issue with windshields that were inadequately bonded to the vehicle.

The affected  2020-2021 F-150 vehicles do not comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards because the front windshields are not adequately bonded to the vehicle body structure, Ford said. In the case of a crash, the windshield may not adequately stay in place.

The recall affects a specific number of F-150 tracks: 79,017 of them in the U.S., 6,986 in Canada, and 1,347 in Mexico., including:

  • 2021 Ford F-150 vehicles built at Dearborn Truck Plant from Oct. 27, 2020, to Feb. 3, 2021
  • 2020-21 Ford Super Duty vehicles built at Kentucky Truck Plant from Oct. 13, 2020, to Jan. 23, 2021

Ford confirmed that there is no report of any accidents or injuries involving this windshield issue.

If you own affected F-150 vehicles, notifications will begin on April 6. Dealers will remove the affected part and replace it with the new one. The Ford reference number for this recall is 21C06.

Ford F-150 Excessive Oil Consumption: Potential Lawsuit

By: Nicole Halavi

After dozens of complaints were found online regarding excessive oil consumption in Ford F-150s, an investigation has been opened to determine whether a class action lawsuit can be filed on behalf of owners and lessees of 2018 Ford F-150s.

Consumers have complained that their trucks are consuming oil too quickly and, in some cases, needed engine replacements. The investigation claims that if this problem is a result of manufacturing or design defects, a class action suit can be filed and, drivers may be able to get their money back for repairs and related expenses.

A sample of the complaints are listed below:

“Now I’m checking oil about every other time I buy gas. On August 15th, the oil was more than a quart low. I had driven less than 3,000 miles since it had been refilled. So I went back to the local dealership. This time they said Ford didn’t want me to bring the truck back until it had 10,000 miles on it. They’re talking about potentially doing a long block replacement… if the new engine is the same as the replaced engine, what’s the gain? So I bought a new truck, that’s supposedly ‘Built For Tough’ and we’re talking about engine replacement within the first four months. That makes no sense to me. ”
— JC, PELL CITY, ALABAMA

“I had to go through the consumption test run around twice. Both times they said it was within the normal range and refused to do anything. Consuming more than a 1 qt every 1000 miles is not normal.”
— GURUCK5J4

Back in May 2019, Ford issued a technical service bulletin (TSB) regarding this oil consumption issue, but the notice failed to mention the cause of the problem. The notice was instead meant to provide guidance to dealerships on how to correct the issue.

In 2017 and 2018, class actions lawsuits were filed over a similar issue in certain Chevy and GMC models. In those cases, the oil consumption issue ultimately stemmed from the construction and composition of the vehicles’ piston rings.

What are Common Issues in the Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator?

Common issues affecting Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator vehicles include electrical issues, engine issues and transmission issues.  For instance, on owner of a 2017 Expedition, described having serious transmission issues: “Car will downshift to 1st gear, engine RPM will go to 8000, and loss of power. This is a major concern with winter coming on, when one travels on ice or snow and car decides to downshift, guess what, one will wreck!! has been to two dealerships for a total of 23 days and they can’t find anything. No codes are stored. Also, from time to time when starting all electrical power will come on but no start.”

Similarly, Navigator owners have complained of wide-ranging engine issues. As one Bakersfield resident described her problems with her 2018 Navigator, “My car has been in the shop more times than I can count. I had just had the entire tranny rebuilt, got the car back after 2.5 months in the shop and the internet/hot spot system went bad, and then I noticed this knocking, loud noise on a cold start. My car was in the shop for almost 2 weeks. I got it back with a new internet system but am waiting on the phasers because they are back-ordered. This is beyond ridiculous.”

What Recent Recalls Have Been Issued for the Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator?

In recent news, it has been revealed that 2800 SUVs, including the Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator, have been recalled due to an issue with the attachment brackets on the driver’s side that may not have been welded properly. According to reports, the headrests on the 2020 models appear to violate federal safety standards as they would not protect the occupants in an accident. A Ford supplier found there was excessive movement in the headrests due to the dispositioned attachment bracket. The supplier found that there were multiple issues with penetration of the welds into the headrest bracket. However, Ford clarified that there hadn’t been any accidents or crashes reported due to the headrest problem.

Here is an excerpt from a complaint regarding the headrest issue:

“The driver’s headrest (and front passenger headrest) is set at such a forward angle that my head is pushed forward, causing pain in my neck. After talking with an orthopedic about the probably long-term issues with pressure on my head caused by the headrest, I was assured of creating a chronic physical neck problem. The headrest angle needs to be adjusted/tilted back slightly to provide just enough space for normal head movement while driving without constant contact with the headrest.” – Ford Expedition 4WD 6-cyl

A plethora of similar issues have been reported prior to this recall. The recall was expected to begin in early July this year. Ultimately, the automakers are responsible for inspecting the issues with your vehicle and timely providing you with a solution.

What Are Common Issues in Ford F-250, F-350 and F-550 Trucks?

Ford recently released new information regarding the recall of a thousands of Ford F-250, F-350, and F-550 diesel trucks. This decision was based on several complaints that revealed an issue with the model’s transmission torque converter damper plates. The plates were not appropriately tempered, which is particularly concerning as a brittle damper plate can cause engine stalls. A stall occurs when the car unexpectedly slows down or stops altogether. If a stall occurs at the wrong place or at the wrong time, this could ultimately lead to a dangerous and potentially fatal result.

Over the past few years, users have lodged numerous complaints against Ford concerning its diesel trucks. Below are a few excerpts from the complaints concerning the particular models:

“The contact stated that while her son was driving 35 mph… a vehicle in front was making a left turn and the driver depressed the brake pedal. An unknown warning light illuminated and the vehicle stalled. The contact lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the vehicle in front that was making a left turn. The vehicle continued 125 feet down the road, crossed over to the opposite lanes, crashed into some trees where it eventually came to a stop. No air bags deployed.”

The incident described above is an example of how a seemingly small defect could lead to a life-threatening situation.

Another user of the Ford F-350 reported the issue: “The contact owns a 2016 Ford F-350. While driving approximately 70 mph, losing power displayed and the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was not able to restart and was towed to classic Ford… The dealer diagnosed the vehicle, but could not locate the cause of the failure.”

Manual transmission in a Ford Mustang

Ford Mustang Manual-Transmission Woes

By: Michael H. Rosenstein, Esq.

The sporty Mustang is a luxury line of sports cars and convertibles and is currently the longest-running production car by Ford Motor Company. Notably, the introduction of the Mustang series into the market has influenced the design of coupes worldwide. However, despite being one of the oldest and most popular cars on the market, Ford has received numerous complaints concerning defects in its Mustang series vehicles. In fact, Ford Mustang owners have filed a class-action lawsuit alleging that the 2011-2019 Mustang and Mustang GT models are equipped with a faulty six-speed manual transmission system. The suit also claims that Ford has been aware of the issue since pre-release testing in 2010.

If your Ford Mustang or Mustang GT has been subject to serious issues or is showing signs of a transmission defect, CCA is here to help. We invite you to call our experts today for a free consultation: (833) LEMON-FIRM.

What are the Transmission Defects in the Ford Mustang?

As per the complaints filed, Ford Mustangs and Mustang GT’s are equipped with a faulty MT82 manual transmission that causes the vehicle to engage harshly, slip, jerk, cause premature wear and tear, and eventually result in failed transmission.

Owners have experienced difficulty when attempting to shift gears.  As one owner of the Ford Mustang 2016 model described the issue: “This car was bought brand new in 2016 and had less than 5300 miles. When this happened, we were at a stop sign, and when I got ready to go, the car wouldn’t. Gave it gas and still wouldn’t go. It doesn’t seem to change gears either. Very scary if this happens when you are on the interstate going at a high rate of speed. You can definitely get killed”. As the complaint states, this could be a hazardous problem and could lead to potentially life-threatening accidents.

The NHTSA had ordered several investigations and found 360+ complaints from users of Ford models indicating issues with the gear shift, especially in colder weather.

Another user of a more recent Ford model complained of a clunking sound while shifting gears: “I was very disappointed regarding this noise, and I spoke with Ford and said nothing could be done. Will go back with more time.”

Ford has allegedly been aware of the transmission problems for more than ten years and has issued several technical service bulletins (TSBs) over the years. However, these issues have continued and have been especially problematic for owners of older Ford models. Ford has denied the existence of any defect and has claimed that these problems arose as a product of normal wear and tear of the manual transmissions.

Below is a list of TSBs issued by Ford in the past:

    • TSB 10-19-4
    • TSB 11-3-18
    • TSB 18-2083
    • TSB 18-2175
    • TSB 18-2267
    • SSM 26614

Common Lincoln Navigator Defects

By: Sepehr Daghighian, Esq.

Lincoln Navigator is a full-size luxury SUV manufactured and sold by the Ford Motor Company since the year 1998. It features Lincoln’s largest cargo space and is the first to offer a 6-seater space in the non-limousine line. While the Navigator is the company’s largest and grandest model, it has come to reveal numerous, serious defects that have troubled its owners for years.

If your Lincoln Navigator has suffered serious issues or defects, CCA is here to help. We invite you to call our experts today for a free consultation: (833) LEMON-FIRM.

What Are Some Common Defects That Occur in the Lincoln Navigator?

Despite being a high-end, luxury vehicle, the Navigator has been subject to several defects; large and small.  While we’ve heard a large number of complaints about the Navigator, some of the most commonly occurring ones are about defects in the air suspension, engine issues, and electronics/infotainment system issues.

One of the common issues faced by Navigator owners are engine problems that manifest as stalling and knocking sounds. This issue has been reported by several users across different models of the Lincoln Navigator. For example, a user of the 2018 Navigator L select described the issue as: “The vehicle developed an engine knocking sound. I left it at the dealership and it’s still there. The dealership states back-ordered parts. If you drive professionally my opinion is this vehicle isn’t ready for prime-time or any type of fleet work. The transmission failed at 75000 miles and it took 3 weeks to replace.”

Another user of the 2019 Navigator experienced stalling and explained the issue, “I purchased a 2019 Lincoln Navigator with odometer disclosure of 16 miles. On its first outing my wife drove the car. Made her first stop in the city, car would not start, at this point we owned the car for less than 100 miles. The local dealer installed a new battery, the car starts and after a while the car stalls in the middle in the center of a busy intersection.” A stall can be extremely dangerous in some situations; it also increases the risk of fatal accidents and injuries.

The Lincoln Navigator has also fallen prey to numerous complaints against its electrical system. Many of the complaints stated an issue with the SUV’s lift gate. An owner of the 2018 Navigator stated, “Back liftgate opens randomly. Dealer has replaced two parts involved and happened again yesterday. Seems to be when you shut one of the front doors firmly and lock the car w keyfob twice. I suspect the air pressure from shutting door and keyfob action cause this. But problem persists. Car was stationary every time.”

What Can I Do if My Lincoln Navigator is Subject to Any of The Defects Mentioned Above?

If your Lincoln Navigator has been experiencing any of the issues discussed above or others specific to your SUV, CCA lawyers are here to handle your case and protect your vehicle from further complications; all this at no cost at all to you. Engine and Transmission Issues in the Ford F-150’s

By: Michael H. Rosenstein

For years, the Ford F-150 has been one of the most popular trucks in the market, largely due to its notable strength and performance.  However, in spite of the popular demand for the F-150, Ford has repeatedly been forced to address serious engine and transmission issues that have afflicted the Ford F-150 for the past several years. Owners have reported a wide variety of complaints; some small and some potentially life-threatening. Ford has addressed a percentage of the issues reported through Technical Service Bulletins, Recalls, and other measures.  However,  consumers continue to complain of many serious problems with their F-150 trucks.

If your Ford F-150 has suffered serious or numerous warranty concerns, CCA is here to help.  We invite you to call our experts today for a free consultation: (833) LEMON-FIRM.

What Are the Common Engine and Transmission Issues in the Ford F-150?

The Ford F-150 has received countless regarding transmission issues while shifting gears. Most complainants conveyed their concerns regarding jerky shifts, lack of control, noises during shifts, or an abrupt transmission into the first gear without any prior warning.

For instance, one F-150 customer complained recently, that “Truck once shifted so hard that I had to check to make sure someone didn’t sneak a heavy weight .. like a bowling ball or something.. into the bed. Very loud bang. I’ve already taken the truck in to have this repaired – last time they reprogrammed the ecm.. I need to take it back down because that did not solve the issue at all.”  Another Ford F-150 complained, “I just bought my Ford 2 days ago and I drove it to work today. I was passing a vehicle at 50 to 55 miles an hour and it shifted 3 times on me quick and hard.”

Transmission shifting is another serious concern for F-150 owners.  One owner described the issues as follows, “This 10 speed [transmission] has been nothing but problems. Hard shifting, whining, clunking. Going back to the dealer for the 3rd time concerning the transmission.”  Other F-150 owners complain that, in spite of numerous visits to the dealership, Ford’s dealerships are unable to fix their transmission concerns.

What is worse, many Ford F-150’s drivers have reported stalling due to issues with the vehicle’s powertrain. A stall occurs when the car unexpectedly slows down or stops completely. If a stall takes place in an unfortunate circumstance, it could lead to a life-threatening accident.  An owner of the Ford F-150 2018 model stated, “While coming to a stop, the engine shut off and a message displayed that the engine auto start/stop function was engaged. Put the vehicle in park, and re-start engine. Very dangerous to do this in moving traffic. This was with the auto start/stop feature already disengaged.  Another user complained, “Engine stalling out at low speeds and when starting out. Engine doesn’t stop but there must be some connection between the electrical and the transmission. After a few seconds the engine seems to want to act normal and then starts to go again.”
