Ford Announces Recall of 90K Vehicles Due to EcoBoost Engine Failures

Ford Motor Company has initiated a recall for approximately 90,736 vehicles due to critical failures in EcoBoost engines that could potentially lead to severe engine damage.

History Behind The Recall

The recall involves six models from the 2021-2022 lineup, equipped with either 2.7L or 3.0L EcoBoost engines. The affected models are the Ford Bronco, F-150, Edge, Explorer, and the Lincoln Nautilus and Aviator SUVs. This action comes after an investigation that started in January 2022 when Ford’s global Critical Concern Review Group (CCRG) noted 22 instances of engine failures in the Lincoln Aviator and Nautilus models, which had been in service for three months or less.

Further investigations in May 2021 expanded to include a broader range of vehicles after a teardown of failed engines under warranty revealed that 251 engines had suffered from fractured intake valves. These fractures led to valves falling into the combustion chamber, causing catastrophic engine damage.

Which Models Are Affected

The recall specifically targets the following models and years equipped with the problematic EcoBoost engines:

  • Ford Bronco (2021-2022)
  • Ford F-150 (2021-2022)
  • Ford Edge (2021-2022)
  • Ford Explorer (2021-2022)
  • Lincoln Nautilus (2021-2022)
  • Lincoln Aviator (2021-2022)

What Owners Need to Do Next

Ford is scheduled to begin sending recall notification letters to dealers on September 30, 2024, with owner notifications following from October 7 to 11, 2024. Owners of the affected vehicles are advised not to use their vehicles until the issue is resolved.

Dealers will inspect the vehicles to determine the cumulative number of engine cycles. Engines that do not meet Ford’s cycle threshold test will be replaced at no cost to the owner.

Owners who have previously paid for engine repairs related to this defect may be eligible for reimbursement. Ford has provided specific guidelines for reimbursement, encouraging owners to retain all receipts and documentation related to the repairs.

Broader Impact

This recall is part of a troubling trend for Ford, as the company has issued 46 separate recalls since January 2024, the highest number by any automaker this year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). These recalls potentially affect nearly 4 million vehicles.

Ford has identified that the issue stemmed from the supplier’s inadequate grinding processes, which resulted in insufficient hardness of the intake valves, making them brittle and susceptible to cracking. Following these findings, the material used for the intake valves was changed for vehicles produced after October 31, 2021, which improved their hardness and durability.

Vehicle owners are encouraged to contact Ford at their earliest convenience to address this recall and ensure the safety and reliability of their vehicles.

How Ford Owners Can Take Back Control

While recalls have been communicated to owners, many continue to be unhappy with the solutions provided by automakers. These problems have the potential to escalate into further action, just like this – underlining the importance of protecting consumer rights.
