History Behind the Recall
Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) has issued a safety recall for 48,494 SUVs in the U.S. due to a rearview camera defect that violates federal safety standards. The issue stems from either a cold soldering fault in a voltage regulator or a software defect within the vehicle’s microprocessor. These malfunctions may result in the rearview camera failing to display an image when the vehicle is placed in reverse.
The defect violates Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 111, which mandates that the rear visibility system must default to displaying a rearview image at the beginning of every backing event. A blank screen can increase the risk of crashes if drivers rely on the camera and fail to notice the issue in time.
The issue was first investigated by Stellantis Europe in March 2024, with tests and analysis continuing through early 2025. A voluntary recall decision was made on April 8, 2025.
Which Models Are Affected
The recall covers the following vehicles:
- 2023–2025 Alfa Romeo Tonale SUVs (8,122 units) Built between February 9, 2023, and April 7, 2025.
- 2023–2025 Dodge Hornet SUVs (40,372 units) Built between August 31, 2022, and April 1, 2025.
Affected vehicles may fail to display the rearview image during reversing, significantly increasing the risk of a crash.
What Owners Need to Do Next
FCA US will notify owners beginning June 4, 2025. Depending on the vehicle’s build date:
- Vehicles built on or before December 6, 2023, will have the entire radio assembly replaced and receive a software update.
- Vehicles built after December 6, 2023, will receive a software update only, as their hardware already includes the updated circuit board.

How Dodge and Alfa Romeo Owners Can Take Back Control
While this recall has been communicated to owners, many continue to be unhappy with the solutions provided by automakers. These problems have the potential to escalate into further action, underlining the importance of protecting consumer rights.
