History Behind the Recall
Ford has announced a significant recall affecting 272,000+ vehicles, including select 2021–2023 Ford Bronco Sport SUVs and 2022–2023 Ford Maverick pickups, due to defective 12-volt starter batteries. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), these batteries can degrade while in use, leading to unexpected engine stalls or failure to restart when using stop/start functionality.
The issue stems from a manufacturing defect in batteries produced by Camel, a major battery supplier. In some cases, hazard lights may also fail during a stall, creating a serious safety risk, especially if the vehicle becomes immobilized in traffic.
While no injuries, fires, or crashes have been reported, Ford began investigating after receiving several complaints from consumers. This recall also includes vehicles that had been previously recalled in April 2024 for a similar issue and now require an updated repair.
Which Models Are Affected?
The recall impacts the following vehicles:
- Ford Bronco Sport manufactured between Feb. 5, 2020, and Oct. 20, 2022
- Ford Maverick pickup trucks manufactured between Feb. 5, 2021, and Oct. 20, 2022
- In total, 272,000+ vehicles are affected across the U.S.
What Owners Need to Do Next
Ford dealerships will replace the defective batteries with new Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) batteries, free of charge. Owners who have already paid for a battery replacement may be eligible for reimbursement.
Notification letters are being sent, and owners can contact Ford Customer Service at 1-866-436-7332, using Recall Number 25S02. Alternatively, visit the NHTSA website and enter your VIN to check your vehicle’s status. The NHTSA campaign number for this recall is 24V267.
How Ford Owners Can Take Back Control
While these recalls have been communicated to owners, many continue to be unhappy with the solutions provided by automakers. These problems have the potential to escalate into further action, underlining the importance of protecting consumer rights.
