Volkswagen Group of America has issued a recall for 177,493 model year 2024-2025 Volkswagen Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport vehicles over concerns that their engine covers could come loose, posing a potential fire hazard.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) published the recall notice, emphasizing the risk of melting and fire if the engine cover makes contact with hot engine components.
Why Are These Vehicles Being Recalled?
Volkswagen identified that the engine cover may have been improperly installed during manufacturing. If the cover becomes loose while the vehicle is in operation, it could shift and come into contact with high-temperature surfaces in the engine compartment. This increases the likelihood of melting plastic components and potentially causing a fire.
Volkswagen first detected the issue after multiple field reports indicated instances where engine covers detached, leading to localized damage. While no injuries have been reported, the automaker is taking precautionary action to prevent further incidents.
Which Models Are Affected?
The recall includes:
- 115,310 Volkswagen Atlas SUVs manufactured between June 16, 2023, and Dec. 12, 2024
- 62,183 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport SUVs manufactured between June 16, 2023, and Dec. 9, 2024
This recall affects Volkswagen owners across the United States who own the affected models.
How Volkswagen Will Fix the Issue
Volkswagen plans to remove the engine covers from the recalled vehicles at no cost to owners. The automaker has not yet confirmed if a redesigned cover will be provided as a replacement.
Volkswagen will begin mailing notification letters to owners by April 18, 2025. In the meantime, owners are advised to contact Volkswagen customer service at 800-893-5298 if they have concerns about their vehicle. Alternatively, drivers can check their VIN on the NHTSA recall website to see if their vehicle is affected.
What Should Owners Do Now?
- If you own a 2024-2025 Volkswagen Atlas or Atlas Cross Sport, be on the lookout for an official recall letter from Volkswagen.
- Check your engine compartment for any signs of a loose engine cover. If you notice any unusual odors or melting plastic, stop driving the vehicle and contact a Volkswagen dealership.
- Schedule a free service appointment at a Volkswagen dealer as soon as you receive a recall notice.
How Volkswagen Owners Can Take Back Control
While recalls have been communicated to owners, many continue to be unhappy with the solutions provided by automakers. These problems have the potential to escalate into further action, just like this, underlining the importance of protecting consumer rights.
