General Motors (GM) has issued a recall for 70,768 GMC Sierra 1500 trucks due to faulty hood molding that could lead to the front grille deflector detaching while driving. The recall was officially reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and highlights a potential crash risk for affected vehicles.
What’s Causing the Recall?
GM has identified a defect in the attachments that hold the chrome front grille deflectors in place. Over time, these attachments may fracture, resulting in the deflector detaching from the vehicle while in motion. This could pose a serious road hazard and increase the risk of crashes for both the driver and other vehicles.
Between April 2022 and December 2024, GM received 1,225 field complaints potentially related to this issue, including reports of four accidents allegedly caused by detached grille deflectors. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported.
Which GMC Vehicles Are Affected?
The recall affects:
- 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 trucks equipped with chrome grille deflectors.
- Only trucks manufactured after GM’s 2022 model year mid-cycle enhancement (RPO J22) are impacted.
- Non-chrome grille deflectors and GMC Sierra 2500/3500 models are not affected.
What GM Owners Should Do Next
GM is expected to notify owners soon with details on how to fix the issue free of charge. If you own an affected vehicle, you should contact your local GMC dealer for further instructions.
For questions, GM customer service can be reached at 1-800-462-8782, or visit NHTSA’s website to check for recalls using your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).
Until repairs are made, drivers should inspect their front grille deflectors and be cautious while driving to prevent potential detachment.
How GM Owners Can Take Back Control
While recalls have been communicated to owners, many continue to be unhappy with the solutions provided by automakers. These problems have the potential to escalate into further action, just like this, underlining the importance of protecting consumer rights.
