Stellantis Recalls 1.16 Million Vehicles Over Rearview Camera Issue

Stellantis, the parent company of Chrysler, is recalling 1.16 million vehicles in North America due to a software issue affecting rearview cameras. This recall involves a range of models from Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep, and Ram, primarily from the 2021-2023 model years. Here’s what you need to know about this significant recall.

Background of the Recall

Stellantis initiated this recall after identifying a problem with the radio software that prevents rearview camera images from displaying when the vehicle is in reverse. This defect increases the risk of a crash, as drivers may not have the necessary visibility when backing up. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) confirmed the issue, prompting the recall.

Affected Models

The recall covers a wide array of vehicles, including:

  • 2021-2022 Dodge Durango
  • 2021-2023 Chrysler Pacifica
  • 2021-2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L
  • 2022 Ram 1500, 2500, and 3500
  • 2022-2023 Jeep Compass, Grand Cherokee, Wagoneer, and Grand Wagoneer
  • 2022-2023 Ram Promaster

This includes over 1.03 million vehicles in the United States and 126,000 in Canada.

Steps Being Taken

Stellantis has developed an over-the-air software update to address this issue. A prompt to accept the update will appear on the media screens of the affected vehicles. As of now, the software has already been updated in more than 735,000 vehicles.

The company began investigating the issue in October 2023, reviewing warranty data, field records, and customer assistance records. Despite the defect, Stellantis has reported no related injuries or crashes.

Owner Notifications and Next Steps

Stellantis will start notifying dealers and affected vehicle owners about the recall on or around August 2, 2024. Owners who have already paid for repairs related to this issue will be reimbursed upon providing adequate proof of payment.

Earlier this year, Tesla also announced a recall for nearly 200,000 Model S, X, and Y vehicles from the 2023 model year due to similar rearview camera issues.

Advice for Vehicle Owners

If you own one of the affected Stellantis vehicles, it is crucial to accept the software update prompt to ensure your rearview camera functions correctly and to comply with federal rear visibility requirements.
