Two Separate Issues Force Stellantis to Recall Dodge, RAM and Chrysler Vehicles

Issues affecting the stability control and airbags have forced Stellantis hands into a host of recalls – hundreds of thousands affected.

Airbag Recall – All You Need to Know

A manufacturing defect may cause airbags to explode unexpectedly, causing small metal pieces to fly out and injure or kill occupants. After a thorough investigation, FCA announced that “affected vehicles may have had moisture introduced into the inflator.”. According to the document, this may be due to corrosion in the inflator causing them to explode. The rupture could cause compressed gas to be released and the surrounding material could be propelled through the car. So far, the automaker has received two warranty claims and five customer issues that need attention related to the recall. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported so far.

Which Vehicles Are Affected?

For the airbag recall, Stellantis have outlined that the 2018-2021 Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 vehicles are those affected.

What Owners Need to Do Next

Letters informing owners and lessees starting May 3 rd , 2024, asking them to send proof of ownership or payment to receive full reimbursement for the cost of repairs. The recall notice also states that dealerships will replace the side airbags free of charge. This recall has been announced quite late, considering some recalled vehicles turn six years old this year.

Stability Control Failure – All You Need to Know

Separate from the airbag issue, Stellantis also recently announced a recall affecting SUVs and pickups due to a software malfunction. The stability control system could fail causing an accident due to handling loss. The issue also relates to the anti-lock braking system which turns off the stability control system, an important safety feature which prevents steering ability in emergencies. These systems are essential in conditions with low grip such as icy or flooded roads. Plus, since 2012, every new passenger car needs to include an ESC system after studies proved that it reduces fatality in rollover crashes and single- vehicle collisions.

Which Models Are Affected?

The 2022 Dodge Durango and 2022 Ram 2500 and 3500 are affected by this recall. The Ram 2500 took the majority of the recall numbers (158,000 of the 211,581 vehicles). With 53,000 Durangos and 524 Ram 3500s.

What Owners Need to Do Next

Stellantis have announced that owners will be notified about the recall starting in July. This recall will involve taking the affected vehicle into the dealership where the Anti-lock braking system will be upgraded or replaced free of charge.

How Vehicle Owners Can Take Back Control

While recalls have been announced, many continue to be unhappy with the solutions provided by automakers. These problems have the potential to escalate into further legal action – underlining the importance of protecting consumer rights.
