Ford Models Subject to Recall Due to Loss of Oil Pressure – All You Need to Know

Ford owners are at risk of crashing due to potential issues with the oil pump belt or tensioner. Find out which models are affected and what you can do next to resolve this issue.

History Behind The Recall

Ford has announced over 100,000 vehicles have potential oil pump defects as a result of a faulty drive belt tensioner. The tensioner responsible for keeping a tight grip on the belt and pulley system during engine operation is intermittently causing engines to fail. The NHTSA reports that a loss of oil pressure could result in engine stalling, loss of power breaking assistance, and increase the likelihood of a crash.

Which Ford Models Are Affected?

The recent recall affects 139.730 Ford Focus and EcoSport vehicles. These vehicles are equipped with the turbocharged 1.0L I-3 EcoBoost engine. This includes 2017-2021 EcoSport crossovers manufactured from April 3rd, 2017, to October 12th, 2021, and 2016-2018 Ford Focus models produced between March 24th, 2015, and May 4th, 2018.

Issues Owners Have Faced So Far

Owners have experienced several issues related to this recall including low pressure warning lights, check engine lights, and loud noises coming from their engine bay. A total of 95 complaints have been reported by owners of the affected Ford models and the majority of the reports indicated the low oil pressure warning light with a reduced power output which is either immediate or gradual. Reportedly there have been two injuries and one crash associated with this issue at present.

What Ford Owners Need To Do Next

The issue that Ford and the affected supplier (Dayco Europe SRL in Italy.) are facing is that the parts are not readily available to fix all the affected vehicles. Owners are therefore left on Standby until Ford announces further instructions. Over time, Ford will ask owners to take their vehicle into their local dealership to receive a free fix and replacement part – this is not expected to happen until at least February 2024.

How Consumers Can Take Back Control

This latest recall from Ford affects 130,000+ owners. Whilst recalls have been announced for the affected Focus and EcoSport vehicles, many owners continue to be unhappy with the solutions provided by automakers. These problems have the potential to escalate into further legal action, just like this – underlining the importance of protecting consumer rights.
